Etsuko Kimura PROFILE
Etsuko Kimura is an artist, whose photography work has been extensively recognized in numerous exhibitions in and outside of New York and Tokyo. Kimura is the recipient of some awards and honors, including Nikon and Fnac. She carried on her photographic project on a-year-long grant by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal.
Kimura has been portraying cities and documenting people for a life-long project. She launched her career in New York in the 90's among local artists in downtown NYC to share art, photography, and life itself. She lived over years in Greenwich Village (Manhattan), where people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds live together side by side. There she embraced the creative pulse of the city and all its magic.
Japanese-born Etsuko Kimura went to New York University (NYU) to earn both her Bachelor's degree in French Literature and her Master's degree in Art/Photography. In NY, Kimura attended the graduate school of Columbia University to study architecture, and joined in International Center of Photography (ICP) originated from Magnum Photos. Her photographic practice extends beyond visual-art to photojournalism.
Besides photography, she has been recently participating in experimental music and performing in concerts. The sound project she collaborated with a contrabassist is the winner of 'Contest for Artistic Projects' by Serralves Foundation.
